Liver diseases in the Asia-Pacific region: a Lancet Gastroenterology & Hepatology Commission

Abstract: The Asia-Pacific region is home to more than half of the global population and accounted for 62·6% of global deaths due to liver diseases in 2015. 54·3% of global deaths due to cirrhosis, 72·7% of global deaths due to hepatocellular carcinoma, and more than two-thirds of the global burden of acute viral hepatitis occurred in this region in 2015. Chronic hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection caused more than half of the deaths due to cirrhosis in the region, followed by alcohol consumption (20·8%), non-alcoholic fa… Show more

“…Recently, a consensus by an international panel of experts recommended a change in name for NAFLD to metabolic (dysfunction) associated fatty liver disease (MAFLD) 7 . Given the dramatic and growing prevalence of MAFLD that affects more than quarter of the global population, 8,9 the serious hepatic and extra‐hepatic sequelae, 10‐12 and the unavailability of pharmacological therapy, re‐naming and re‐defining of this disease is welcome.…”

“…Based on the data of International Agency for Research on Cancer, more than 750,000 new liver cancer cases and 695,900 cancer deaths occurred all over the world every year [1]. It is the second largest cause of liver-related deaths in the Asia-Pacific region, which accounted for 43.6% of all liver-related deaths in the region [2]. In China, HCC is the most commonly diagnosed cancer and the leading cause of cancer death in men before the age of 60 years.…”

“…In China, HCC is the most commonly diagnosed cancer and the leading cause of cancer death in men before the age of 60 years. According to the WHO's 2015 Global Health Estimates (GHE) dataset, chronic hepatitis B infection accounted for the most part of all deaths due to liver cancer (53%), whereas hepatitis C accounted for 6% of such deaths [2], so it is universally accepted that HBV infection is the prodromal stage of most HCC in China. Generally, HCC has a poor prognosis with relatively low 5-year survival rates (approximately 10%) [3].…”
