Liver fibrosis staging using T1 mapping on gadoxetic acid-enhanced MRI compared with DW imaging

Abstract: The HBP T1 relaxation time measurement on gadoxetic acid-enhanced MRI images might be a potential biomarker in the staging of hepatic fibrosis, and was more accurate than the ADC measurement.

“…With an inversion time of 180 msec at 1.5T, the signal from Gd‐EOB‐DTPA‐enhanced liver parenchyma approaches the null point of fat tissue. In our study, T 1 relaxation times of the liver at 18–20 minutes after Gd‐EOB‐DTPA administration were 192.6 ± 75.8 msec, which are consistent with the results of the previous study . The mean tumor CNR and the grade of visual tumor conspicuity on DWI 18–20 minutes after Gd‐EOB‐DTPA administration were significantly higher with STIR than with CHESS.…”

“…Liver fibrosis by increasing barriers and associated reduction in vascularity leads to reduced ADC values. Studies have demonstrated that DWI is an accurate technique for detection of fibrosis11,12 while other studies have shown poor performance of DWI 13,14. However, there is no established standard technique for performing DWI for staging liver fibrosis and optimal b-values remain unknown.…”

“…Other groups have found that the HBP T1 relaxation time significantly correlated with the fibrosis stage and necro‐inflammatory activity grade, and had a high diagnostic accuracy for stage 3 fibrosis (AUROC of 0.82), but a relatively low diagnostic accuracy for grade 3 necro‐inflammatory activity (AUROC of 0.68) . Furthermore, they found that HBP T1 relaxation times had a significantly higher accuracy than DWI‐ADC values for liver fibrosis staging .…”
