Living benthic Foraminifera from the Saquarema lagoonal system (Rio de Janeiro, southeastern Brazil)

Abstract: Transitional environments such as coastal lagoons with narrow connections to the sea are ecosystems very sensitive to natural or anthropogenic pressures. They are biodiversity hotspots and for this reason it should be studied and preserved. This study lists the benthic Foraminifera species from the Saquarema lagoonal system (SLS), Rio de Janeiro state, Brazil. This complex ecosystem consists of four large connected lagoons, namely Urussanga, Jardim, Boqueirão, and Saquarema. A poorly diversified benthic forami… Show more

“…Foraminifera: they are mainly represented by brackish lagoonal assemblage containing an oligospecific fauna characterized by the high dominance of Ammonia tepida (75-91%) accompanied by few species (mainly Haynesina germanica 4-8% and Porosononion granosum 1-19%). The low diversity (S: 3 to 7 taxa, Fisher α-index: 0.4 to 5, H: 0.3 to 1.7) and the high dominance of A. tepida, a euryhaline species, are indicative of an enclosed brackish lagoon [67][68][69][70][71]. This assemblage is recorded in BU5 core, from 330 to 300 cm and from 122 to 81 cm, and in BU7 core, from 216 to the top.…”

“…9, 10; appendix 3) are commonly found in living assemblages of Brazilian coastal shallow waters (e.g. Delavy et al, 2016;Martins et al, 2016 a, b;Raposo et al, 2016Raposo et al, , 2018Belart et al, 2017Belart et al, , 2019Duleba et al, 2018). However, in the lower sedimentary layers (240-229 cm), in addition to a relatively high foraminiferal density and slight increase of diversity, the presence of Ammonia parkinsoniana, bolivinids and buliminids species (Figs.…”

“…The species identification was based on several references, such as Loeblich and Tappan (1988), Debenay et al (1998), Semensatto-Jr. and Dias-Brito (2004), Raposo et al (2016), Belart et al (2017) and Alves Martins et al (2019). The species nomenclature was updated following the World Foraminifera Database (Hayward et al, 2017).…”
