Living in the present while imagining the future: How school and its promises shape conceptions of childhood for indigenous tribal students in India

Abstract: This article builds on Allison James and Alan Prout's call to focus more on theorizing the social construction of time in childhood and explores how school, as an organization and an experience, influences students' conceptions of childhood and experiences of being a child. Extending the conception of time of childhood to include their future projections, we assert that aspiring to become an adult, while seeming to diminish the experience of childhood, actually provides motivation and hope to children. “…Children's play with items such as these becomes practice for adult activities and endeavors. This capacity to play and engage with matter and material, reflect and learn from that engagement in environments, and make projections and decisions for the future was found to be a constant across the life span in this study just as Hitlin and Elder's (2007) and Finann et al's (2016) research. “…Finann et al (2016) grounded childhood in India in time and space, finding the intersection between childhood and adulthood by analyzing the present, past, and future: the ability and propensity to reflect on the past and look to the future is a human trait, no matter age. Although our understanding of the concept of time deepens as we age, the act of remembering and positing futures transcends “temporal categories such as childhood and adulthood because within each of these life stages, we are constantly looking forward and backward” (Hitlin & Elder, 2007, as cited in Finann et al, 2016, p. 263). The idea and act of looking toward the future proposes the characteristics of instinctual drive for survival based on needs, curiosity and quest for understanding, and desire for sensory experiences and stimulation.…”
