LivWell: a sub-national Dataset on the Living Conditions of Women and their Well-being for 52 Countries

Abstract: Data on women’s living conditions and socio-economic development are important for understanding and addressing the pronounced challenges and inequalities faced by women worldwide. While such information is increasingly available at the national level, comparable data at the sub-national level are missing. We here present the LivWell global longitudinal dataset, which includes a set of key indicators on women’s socio-economic status, health and well-being, access to basic services and demographic outcomes. “…In addition to the three datasets, the CoDB also provides a spatial file with the boundaries of the subnational harmonized regions either as sf object or a multi-polygon geopackage (see section Data Records). For the production of the spatial file, we relied on the already harmonized geographies provided by the IPUMS international, the DHS Spatial Repository 10 , the work done by the LiveWell project 11 for harmonizing DHS boundaries and the Database of Global Administrative Areas (GADM) 12 .…”

“…To ensure the accuracy and reliability of the CoDB, we employ a two-stage validation process. In the first stage, we validate our National dataset by comparing some of our indicators to those from the DHS STAT compiler 11 and the UN database on Household Size and Composition.…”

“…We then converted the DHS household survey data to country level by using data processing and aggregation methods documented in detail elsewhere by LivWell; in Ref. [53]. Briefly, the household-level data were first aggregated to the sub-national level; with a corresponding R function used to transform the raw data into the final measures at the country level.…”

“…This measurement is focused on calculating the Gini coefficient between provinces. To make the computation easier, each province's development level was taken into account while determining the Gini coefficient breakdown, as shown in Equation (11). In the formula above, u represents the level of overall development of women in the five provinces, y ji (y hr ) represents the level of the development of women in any city in region j(h), n represents the total number of provinces, k represents the number of regions, and n j (n h ) represents the number of provinces in region j(h).…”

“…The California Budget & Policy Center, for example, has developed the California Women's Well-Being Index, which is a multifaceted, composite measure consisting of five "dimensions" including health, personal safety, employment & earning, economic security, and political empowerment [9]. The United Nations has created the Gender Disparity Index, which encompasses variables including, the freedom of movement, property rights, freedom to work, and financial rights [10] A recent study has developed a set of indicators on women's health and well-being, such as women's living conditions, decision making power, reproductive health, fertility, and issues related to domestic violence [11] (Figure 1).…”
