Load Capacity Comparison of Different Wet Multi-Plate Clutches with Sinter Friction Lining with Regard to Spontaneous Damage Behavior

Abstract: Wet multi-plate clutches are safety-critical components of drive trains. Failure and damage must therefore be strongly avoided. In contrast to longterm damage, spontaneous damage and failures are difficult to predict. Different authors have already theorized the influence of different parameters on the carrying capacity. This paper extends the analysis of these effects by conducting experimental investigations. Furthermore, an evaluation method that allows to compare different clutch systems regarding their lo… Show more

“…The temperature behavior over time is comparable to that of the reference model, except for the temperature level. These results confirm the simulative results of Zhao [15] and Abdulla [19], as well as the experimental results of Zagrodzki [33], Schneider [34] and Grötsch [35], describing an influence of the steel plate thickness on the thermal behavior. As the last parameter, the thickness of the steel plate was doubled.…”

“…Further, reducing the plate number, and, thus, the number of gaps reduces the transmittable torque, whereas decreasing the oil viscosity affects the torque response during engagement 46 . In the case of injection lubrication, decreasing the flow rate, e.g., may negatively affects the cooling performance resulting in damage of the clutch system in the worst case 47 . Hence, optimizing the drag loss behavior has to be done under consideration of the friction and thermal behavior.…”

“…Durch die unterschiedlichen lokalen Temperaturen innerhalb des Bauteils kommt es zu hohen Spannungen im Bauteil, die bei zyklischer Wiederholung der thermischen Belastung zu Thermoermüdungsschäden führen können. Zur Bewertung von Werkstoffen hinsichtlich ihrer Thermoschockempfindlichkeit führt [6] den Wärmespannungsindex χ ein.…”
