Local allergic conjunctivitis: a phenotype of allergic conjunctivitis

Abstract: Purpose Local allergic rhinitis (LAR) has been reported in the field of otolaryngology; however, the concept of local allergic conjunctivitis (LAC) has not been widely studied in the ophthalmologic community. We routinely examined total IgE levels in tear fluids (t-tIgE) and antigen-specific IgE levels in serum (s-sIgE) in patients with suspected allergic conjunctivitis, on the basis of Japanese guidelines for allergic conjunctival diseases. There are several cases in which the results of t-tIgE and s-sIgE tes… Show more

“…Vitro testing of IgE antibodies and specific allergens are widely used [27]. Some scholars claim that the results of IgE of tears and IgE of serum are sometimes inconsistent, so the IgE positive rate of tears may be more meaningful for local allergic conjunctivitis [107].…”

“…A previous report using skin prick test or ImmunoCAP, wherein results were highly correlated with the current panel IgE test [15], revealed that the positivity of D. pteronyssinusand house dust-speci c IgE in patients with asthma was higher compared with patients with COPD [16,17]. Contrarily, the positivity for Candida (21.5%) and moth (35.4%) in this study was comparable to the reported positivity in asthma [16] and was not different between ACO and non-ACO COPD (Table 1).…”

“…33 A recent Japanese study suggests the existence of an ocular counterpart of LAR in non-atopic patients with conjunctivitis and detectable total IgE in tears. 34 Unfortunately, the specificity of IgE in tears was not defined, since conjunctival allergen challenge was not performed. There is still a lack of knowledge on the nature of ocular symptoms as to whether there is a real sensitization in conjunctiva or whether the symptoms occur as a result of nasal-ocular reflexes due to allergen exposure.…”
