“…2 and 3) and, accordingly, the sitescale recruitment estimates obtained from each method were not significantly correlated (r = 0.31, df = 5, p N 0.05). Invertebrate recruitment onto Tuffy pads can be lower than recruitment on natural substrate (see Navarrete et al, 2008a). Here we observed inconsistency among locations in the relative magnitude of the recruitment estimates obtained by means of each method.…”

“…Barnacle recruitment was determined using 10 × 10 cm PVC plates covered with Saf-T-Walk (3M, Maplewood, MN), a rubbery rugose tape used as an anti-slip surface on boats. Such collectors have been widely used (e.g., Broitman et al, 2008;Dudas et al, 2009;Farrell et al, 1991;Menge, 1992;Menge & Menge, 2013Menge et al, 1999Menge et al, , 2003Menge et al, , 2010Menge et al, , 2011Menge et al, , 2015Navarrete et al, 2005Navarrete et al, , 2008Pfaff et al, 2011Pfaff et al, , 2015 and provide an index of barnacle recruitment. Mussel recruitment was similarly determined using plastic mesh balls (Tuffies), also in wide use (references in previous sentence).…”

“…Additionally, the stimulation of settlement and metamorphosis by conespecific cues, and the consequent delay of such events by the absence of the stimuli have been documented for gregarious species (Jensen 1989, Gebauer et al 2003. However, populations of A. hassleri are not gregarious, displaying interference and territorial behaviours that restrict their adult population density (Navarrete & Castilla 1990, Navarrete et al 2008. The integration of these responses allows us to infer that the nature (physical, chemical and/or biological) of the cues inducing settlement and metamorphosis in decapod crustaceans depends largely on the characteristics of the habitat and demographics of the adult populations.…”

“…The regulated species include the mussel Perumytilus purpuratus and the reef-forming sabellarid polychaete Phragmathopoma virgini (Castilla et al 1989, Zamorano et al 1995, both of which also play important ecological roles as bioengineers and facilitators of microhabitats for a significant portion of the invertebrate community in these areas (Sepúlveda et al 2003, Prado & Castilla 2006. Taking account that Acanthocyclus species recruit to the intertidal zone, maintaining a close interaction with the colonies of P. purpuratus and P. virgini from early postlarval ontogeny (Jara & Moreno 1983, Navarrete et al 2008, and that A. hassleri have a relatively higher density with respect of their congeneric species, it is plausible that both the colonial species and/or conspecifics adults may act as potential promoters of settlement and Vol. 45, Nº3, 2010 Revista de Biología Marina y Oceanografía metamorphosis for this crab.…”
