“…Multiple studies involving thousands of patients support the premise that the use of lidocaine with epinephrine is safe in the digits. [4][5][6][7][8][9] In this study, we aimed to make an objective comparison of digital block with and without epinephrine in chemical matricectomy.…”
The mean anesthetic volume used in the epinephrine group (2.2 ± 0.4 mL) was significantly lower than the plain lidocaine group (3.1 ± 0.6 mL). There was no statistically significant difference in postoperative pain and recurrence rates, but duration of drainage was significantly shorter in the epinephrine group (11.1 ± 2.5 days) than in the plain lidocaine group (19.0 ± 3.8 days). CONCLUSION Digital block with epinephrine is safe in selected patients, and epinephrine helps to shorten the postoperative drainage period. The authors have indicated no significant interest with commercial supporters.

“…Many authors have reported safe use of lidocaine-epinephrine mixture for digital block in good number of patients. [44][45][46] They did not observe digital necrosis in any of their patients, rather there were added advantages of combining with epinephrine. Epinephrine facilitates faster onset of anesthesia, prolonged post-procedure pain relief, and lesser amount of local anesthetic required without much need of tourniquet placement to control bleeding.…”

“…2 Another retrospective chart review identified 63 patients who had digit surgery with lidocaine with epinephrine and found no cases of digital ischemia or necrosis. 3 An earlier literature review found 50 cases of digital gangrene reported. 4 Most occurred in the early 20th century; 21 cases used epinephrine, with concentrations reported in only 4 cases (ranging from 1:160,000 to 1:400,000).…”
scite is a Brooklyn-based organization that helps researchers better discover and understand research articles through Smart Citations–citations that display the context of the citation and describe whether the article provides supporting or contrasting evidence. scite is used by students and researchers from around the world and is funded in part by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health.
