Local Atomic Structures of Amorphous Fe80B20 and Fe70Nb10B20 Alloys Studied by Electron Diffraction

Abstract: Effect of Nb addition on the stabilization of amorphous Fe 80 B 20 alloy was studied by electron diffraction structure analysis with the help of computer simulation. Atomic structure models with dense-random-packing 5000 atoms were constructed to reproduce interference functions obtained experimentally for the amorphous Fe 80 B 20 and Fe 70 Nb 10 B 20 alloys. In the structure models so obtained, prism-type local atomic arrangements dominated around B atoms in both the alloys, while deformed-bcc and icosahedral… Show more

“…Peak values of Fe-Fe, Fe-B and Fe-Nb partial PDFs are found at 0.252, 0.202, and 0.265 nm, respectively. It should be noted that the similar distances of Fe-Fe, Fe-B and Fe-Nb atomic pairs are reported by Hirata et al [30] for the same chemical composition. Also, Hirotsu et al [12] presented the RMC-PDF fittings to the experimental PDFs for the Fe 70 Nb 10 B 20 glassy sample basing on the results of electron diffraction technique.…”

“…We then moved our subjects to ternary Fe-B-Nb alloys in order to clarify a difference in local atomic structures of metallic glasses with various glass stabilities [14]. We focused especially on ternary Fe 84 Nb 7 B 9 and Fe 70 Nb 10 B 20 glass structures [15,16], with a structural reference of Fe 80 B 20 . The Fe 70 Nb 10 B 20 glass has a high glass forming ability, showing a large supercooled liquid region.…”
