Local Cerebral Glucose Utilisation Following Indoleamine‐ and Piperazine‐Containing 5‐Hydroxytryptamine Agonists

Abstract: Substances with varying structural components have been shown to have 5-hydroxytryptamine (5-HT)-like properties in the CNS. In this study, putative 5-HT agonists with indoleamine moeities--lysergic acid diethylamide (LSD) and 5-methoxy-N,N-dimethyltryptamine (5-MeODMT)--and with piperazine moieties--quipazine (Quip) and 6-chloro-2-(1-piperazinyl)pyrazine (6-CPP) were administered to rats. Local cerebral glucose utilisation was measured using the [14C]2-deoxyglucose autoradiographic technique. It was found tha… Show more

“…[14][15][16][17]19 Serotonin agonists decrease brain glucose metabolism in animals. 49 Increased thalamic volumes in psychotropic-naïve patients with OCD may be consistent with prior reports of hypermetabolism and increased regional cerebral blood flow in the thalamus of adult patients with OCD 6,8,10,50 that decreased after SSRI intervention. 21 This may, in part, explain the finding of Jenike et al 23 of no thalamic volumetric differences between adult patients with OCD and controls.…”

“…There are strong similarities between this pattern of alteration in metabolic activity and that obtained following the administration of other serotonin agonist agents (cf. Freo et al, 1993a;Freo, 1996;Grome and Harper, 1986). Treatment with the serotonin-5HT 2 agonist, m-CPP, at doses that reduced locomotor activity, for example, also depressed functional activity in basal ganglia, dorsal and ventral striatum, raphe nuclei, amygdala, and cortical regions (Freo et al, 1992), as did the administration of quipazine (Freo et al, 1993b).…”
