Various community innovations can positively impact food insecurity and hunger, while also addressing food waste issues. This article focuses on a community innovation known as the Little Free Farmstand (LFF) of Geneva, New York. Little free approaches have appeared across the world to improve access to resources as well as promoting kindness in many communities. This case article undertakes an investigation of the impacts of two LFF's regarding food security and food waste in the City of Geneva. An applied mixed method approach using photojournalism, formal and informal data solicitation from community members, note-taking, and team reflection were undertaken to analyze the impacts of the LFFs. Despite limitations with the study methods discussed in this article, the LFFs demonstrated positive impacts indirectly and directly regarding decreasing food waste and improving access to free, healthy food. While the results of the two LFFs' impacts in the city are interesting, this study showcases accessible methods that other communities can use to measure the impacts of their own community innovations regarding food security and food waste. This study concludes by sharing the various challenges of the LFF project, especially regarding measuring community innovations' impacts. These challenges are separated into economic, social and environmental categories.

Using US county-level data, we employ a difference-in-difference approach to model the effect of direct to consumer local foods activity on local economic performance. We find no evidence that growth in local foods activity is linked to economic performance measured by per capita income and some evidence of a decline in employment. These results casts doubts on the notion that the promotion of local foods can improve the performance of local economies. While the local foods market can present viable business opportunities for some producers, the overall size of the market is too thin to influence overall local economic performance.

Community based air quality monitoring near proppant sand facilities

Silica sand is used in the hydraulic fracturing process as a proppant-a material that holds open fissures in a rock formation to allow oil and gas to escape. Due to the increased demand for proppant sand, numerous sand mining and processing facilities have been constructed in the vicinity of small communities. Silica sand contains crystalline silica, which can cause chronic health problems such as silicosis. This study monitored airborne particulate matter at residences within 800 m from the property line of facilities with active mining, processing, and/or transport. Real-time particulate air monitoring with automated acquisition of explanatory variables: sound and motion to detect transportation; and wind speed and direction to attribute measured PM concentrations to specific sources. The highest daily mean concentrations were 37.3 µg/m³ for PM10 and 14.5 µg/m³ for PM2.5, both of which are well below the EPA National Ambient Air Quality Standards. Using conditional probability plots of PM relative to wind direction elevated short-term (20 second) elevated concentrations were more likely to occur when the wind was blowing from the sand facility. These elevated concentrations occurred infrequently, ranging from 0% to 3% of the sampling time. This study did not measure crystalline silica specifically, but low PM concentrations were observed so crystalline silica is expected to be low. Since PM concentrations were low near the facilities, it can be concluded that these facilities do not increase airborne particulate matter to hazardous concentrations that could cause chronic health conditions. v
