Localizaciones con impactos de rayos recurrentes : aportación a la distribución geográfica de rayos con corrientes extremas y a la caracterización de rayos que afectan aerogeneradores

Abstract

(English) Nowadays, lightning presents a challenge to the proper functioning of an increasingly complex electrical system. One of the most sensitive and exposed to lightning elements are wind turbines. Due to their height and typical elevated location, they can also initiate upward lightning flashes. Current knowledge about lightning still needs more understanding to ensure complete prevention and protection.
 The main objective of the thesis is the characterization of lightning activity for engineering applications for wind turbines and, in general, elevated structures.
 The thesis uses the lightning detections of the LINET lightning location system as the data source. This system was installed and operated within the framework of this thesis. In addition, the thesis develops a detection efficiency calculation tool for evaluating cloud-to-ground lightning detection systems. This tool builds on the previous work of CIGRE TF C4.404A to assess the quality of lightning data.
 The thesis introduces a new concept: recurrent lightning spots (RLS), which are locations repeatedly struck by cloud-to-ground lightning each consecutive year for several years, using only data from lightning location systems. It focuses on two study areas with different lightning activity but similar orography: one is Catalonia (Spain, Europe), and the other is Barrancabermeja (Colombia, South America), in the tropics. The RLS found are associated with tall structures, mountain peaks, and steep terrain. The method allows the identification of sites with tall towers and orographic relief frequently affected by lightning, which are not detected with the mere computation of the lightning density. In addition to the scientific interest to better understand lightning behavior, the new RLS concept provides valuable new information directly applicable to lightning protection engineering.
 On the other hand, the thesis has investigated the geographical distribution of the most extreme lightning currents in an area that includes the region of Catalonia and part of the Mediterranean Sea. Results show that the areas with the most extreme lightning peak currents are over sea and high mountain areas, such as the Pyrenees and Pre-Pyrenees. Depending on the polarity, they are distributed differently, especially in the months with the highest lightning activity (from April to October). Identifying these zones is interesting as information to improve lightning protection standards.
 Based on information on lightning incidents in wind turbines that occurred in Spain between 2007 and 2022, the thesis focuses on the characteristics of lightning detected by a lightning detection system. This approach is novel in the scientific literature and confirms the usefulness of accurate lightning data to assess whether lightning has caused damage to wind turbines. Results show that incidents can happen throughout the year, but especially outside the season of more lightning. In most cases, lightning is detected near the wind turbine within three days before the date indicated and with relatively low intensities. Some criteria is proposed to classify if the incidence occurred in winter lightning conditions, often characterized by low stroke peak current or not being detected, but they can be very energetic. (Español) En la actualidad, las descargas eléctricas atmosféricas (rayos) presentan un desafío para el buen funcionamiento de un sistema eléctrico cada vez más complejo. Uno de los elementos más sensibles y expuestos a los rayos son los aerogeneradores. Estos, aparte de ser objecto del impacto directo del rayo, también pueden iniciar rayos ascendentes, ya que por su altura y por la elevación del terreno donde normalmente se ubican, están expuestos a fuertes campos eléctricos locales bajo las nubes de tormenta. El conocimiento actual sobre el rayo no permite la comprensión suficiente para asegurar una completa prevención y protección.El objetivo principal de la tesis es la caracterización de la actividad de rayos para aplicaciones de ingeniería como aerogeneradores y, en general, estructuras elevadas.La tesis se basa en las detecciones de rayos del sistema de localización de rayos LINET. Este sistema fue instalado y operado en el marco de la tesis. Además, la tesis desarrolla una herramienta de cálculo de la eficiencia de detección para la evaluación de sistemas de detección de rayos nube-tierra. Esta herramienta se basa en los trabajos previos de CIGRE TF C4.404A permitiendo al usuario la evaluación de la calidad de los datos. La tesis introduce un nuevo concepto: las localizaciones con impactos de rayo recurrentes (RLS), que son ubicaciones que se ven afectadas repetidamente por rayos de nube a tierra cada año consecutivo durante un cierto período de varios años, utilizando solo datos de los sistemas de localización de rayos. Se centra en dos zonas de estudio con distinta actividad de rayos, pero orografía similar: una es Cataluña (España, Europa) y la otra en Barrancabermeja (Colombia, América del Sur), en el trópico. Los RLS que se encuentran están relacionados con estructuras altas, picos de montañas y terrenos escarpados. El método permite identificar aquellas torres de gran altura y relieve orográfico frecuentemente afectados por rayos, que no se detectan con el mero cómputo de la densidad de rayos. Además del interés científico por entender mejor el comportamiento de los rayos, el nuevo concepto de RLS proporciona nueva información valiosa directamente aplicable a la ingeniería de protección contra rayos.Por otro lado, en la tesis se ha investigado qué distribución geográfica presentan las corrientes más extremas de rayos, a partir del análisis de corrientes de datos de sistemas de localización de rayos en un área que incluye la región de Cataluña y parte del mar Mediterráneo. En los resultados se observa que las zonas con más actividad de rayos de corriente extrema son el mar y las zonas de alta montaña como Pirineos y Prepirineos. Según la polaridad se distribuyen de forma diferenciada, especialmente los meses de más actividad de rayos (de abril a octubre). Las zonas de intensidades extremas son interesantes como información para mejorar los estándares de protección frente al rayo.
 A partir de información real de incidencias de rayos en aerogeneradores que sucedieron en España entre 2007 y 2022, la tesis se centra en las características de los rayos detectados por un sistema de detección de rayos. Este enfoque es novedoso en la literatura científica y confirma la utilidad de datos de rayos precisos para evaluar si han ocasionado daños en aerogeneradores. Se verifica que pueden suceder durante todo el año, pero especialmente fuera de la temporada de más rayos. En la mayoría de casos se detectan rayos a las inmediaciones del aerogenerador, en los tres días anteriores a la fecha indicada y de intensidades relativamente bajas. Se proponen unos criterios para clasificar si la incidencia ocurrió en condiciones de rayos de invierno, caracterizados a menudo con bajas corrientes de pico o que no se llegan a detectar, pero que pueden llegar a ser muy energéticos.
