Localization algorithms for multilateration (MLAT) systems in airport surface surveillance

Abstract: We present a general scheme for analyzing the performance of a generic localization algorithm for multilateration (MLAT) systems (or for other distributed sensor, passive localization technology). MLAT systems are used for airport surface surveillance and are based on time difference of arrival measurements of Mode S signals (replies and 1,090 MHz extended squitter, or 1090ES). In the paper, we propose to consider a localization algorithm as composed of two components: a data model and a numerical method, both… Show more

“…Multilateration based on Least-Squares (MLS) [15] is one widely used cyber method. Also, the localization error of MLS was studied to improve the localization accuracy [16]. Cramer Rao Bound is used to calculate the localization error bound [17][18][19], in which probability density function of noise is needed to calculate Fisher information matrix.…”

“…Due to the non-linear relationship between the TDOA measurements and the emitter position, several approaches have been developed to linearize this relationship. This resulted in the different type of lateration algorithms and can be grouped as linear and non-linear approach [2, 7,8]. The nonlinear approach lateration algorithm utilizes linear approximation methods and iteration process to establish a linear relationship between the TDOA measurements and emitter position [2, 9,10].…”

“…Multilateration is also proposed as a very efficient integrity check for ADS-B position data (see, for example, [11][12][13]). Jamming and message deletion vulnerabilities cannot be reduced with encryption or multilateration and are closely related to the ADS-B receiver hardware and software implementations that are developed according to the international "standards" or "recommendations" and require particular anti-jamming techniques implemented in the receiver (see for example [7]).…”
