The current study reports, for the first time, the genetic parameters and genetic, phenotypic and environmental correlations and trends of reproductive traits in Arabi sheep. Data were collected at Animal Science Research Station of Khuzestan Ramin Agricultural and Natural Resources University (ASRSKRANRU), southwest of Iran from 2001 to 2008. Litter size at birth (LSB), litter size at weaning (LSW), litter mean weight per lamb born (LMWLB), litter mean weight per lamb weaned (LMWLW), total litter weight at birth (TLWB) and total litter weight at weaning (TLWW) averaged 1.11 lambs, 1.01 lambs, 3.83 kg, 19.43 kg, 4.16 kg and 20.12 kg, respectively. Genetic parameters and correlations were estimated with univariate and bivariate models using restricted maximum likelihood, breeding values of animals were estimated with best linear unbiased prediction (BLUP) and genetic-and phenotypic trends by regression of ewes' average breeding values and phenotypic least square means on year of birth respectively. Random effects were fitted by additive direct genetic effects and permanent environment related to the ewe as well as service sire effects, in addition to fixed effects of ewe age at lambing and lambing year. Heritability estimates of 0.05, 0.02, 0.13, 0.12, 0.04, and 0.06, and repeatability estimates of 0.08, 0.06, 0.17, 0.16, 0.14 and 0.21 for the six traits, respectively. Genetic correlations between traits varied from −0.82 to 0.94. Phenotypic correlations were lower, ranging from −0.33 to 0.52. Estimated annual genetic progress was very low; −0.003 lambs for LSW and 15 g for TLWW. Annual phenotypic trend was only significant for LSW being 0.007 lambs. The study concluded that indirect selection based on total litter weight at weaning could be efficient for the traits studied.

Acetylcholine and the activation of muscarinic receptors influence the activity of neural networks generating locomotor behavior in the mammalian spinal cord. Using electrical stimulations of the ventral commissure, we show that commissural muscarinic (CM) depolarizations could be induced in lumbar motoneurons. We provide a detailed electrophysiological characterization of the muscarinic receptors and the membrane conductance involved in these responses. Activation of the CM terminals, originating from lamina X neurons and partition cells, induced a pathway-specific short-term potentiation (STP) of commissural glutamatergic inputs in motoneurons. This STP is occluded in the presence of the muscarinic antagonist atropine. During fictive locomotion, the activation of the commissural pathways transiently enhanced the motor output in a muscarinic-dependent manner. This study describes for the first time a novel regulatory mechanism of synaptic strength in spinal locomotor networks. Such cellular mechanisms would endow the locomotor central pattern generators with adaptive processes needed to generate appropriate synaptic inputs to motoneurons during different motor tasks.

BackgroundCD226 is a cell surface adhesion molecule expressed in the immune system and central nervous system. Although the role of CD226 in the function of immune cells has been well studied, there has been no report on the potential functional significance of CD226 in neural cells.MethodsWe investigated the role of CD226 on the cognitive function and behaviors using CD226 knockout (CD226KO) and wild‐type mice. The spatial learning and memory were characterized using Morris water maze test, and the behaviors were evaluated using open field and elevated plus maze tests. IL‐10 expression in the hippocampus was measured using RT‐PCR and ELISA.ResultsThe results showed that CD226KO mice displayed increased spatial learning and memory than the wild‐type controls. We also found that genetic deletion of CD226 resulted in decreased anxiety‐like behaviors. In addition, the hippocampal expression level of IL‐10 was increased in the CD226KO mice compared with the WT mice.ConclusionsOur findings suggest that CD226 plays an important role in the modulation of cognition and anxiety in mice.
