Coincidence of Vitiligo, Alopecia areata, Onychodystrophy, Localized Scleroderma and Lichen planus

“…An association between onychodystrophy and vitiligo with alopecia areata is also established [Christianson et al, 1956;Lerner, 1961;Demis and Weiner, 1963], Endocrine dysfunction which sometimes accompanies the vitiligo-alopecia areata complex [Lerner, 1959;Bor et ah, 1969] has been claimed to cause such nail changes via disturbance of the keratin formation. The present case does not support this hypothesis since clinical and endocrinologic evaluation failed to reveal hormonal imbalance.…”

“…Lichen planus has been reported rarely to be associated with localized scleroderma [Klostermann, 1951;Herzberg et ah, 1963] or with vitiligo [Klostermann, 1951;Herzberg et ah, 1963]. Vitiligo frequently is found with localized or systemic sclero derma [Christianson et al, 1956;Tuffanelli and Winkelmann, 1961;Lerner and Sansing, 1973]. Though both diseases may exhibit antithyroid antibodies [Bor et al, 1969;Fisher and Fitzpatrick, 1970;Stringa et ah, 1971], this does not necessarily point to a common underlying cause.…”
