Localized sinonasal mucosal melanoma: Outcomes and associations with stage, radiotherapy, and positron emission tomography response

Abstract: BACKGROUND Sinonasal mucosal melanoma (SNMM) is a rare neoplasm with a poor prognosis. METHODS Retrospective analysis was conducted on 78 patients with localized SNMM treated at MSKCC (1998–2013). Demographic, tumor, imaging and treatment factors were recorded and survival and disease-control outcomes were analyzed. RESULTS Median overall survival (OS) and disease-specific survival (DSS) were 32 and 50 months. Median local recurrence-free survival (LRFS) and distant recurrence-free survival (DRFS) were 43 … Show more

“…The local control rate in our cohort was achieved in 62% with a median follow‐up of 23 months and was comparable to literature: Temam et al reported 46% local control (median follow‐up of 46 months), in the Moreno cohort it was 72% (median follow‐up 34 months) and both Wada et al and Samstein et al also observed 62% local control (median follow‐up 16 and 21 months, respectively).…”

“…A 25%‐45% advantage in local control was observed in the studies by Wada et al and Hardwood et al in patients treated with hypofractionated schemes compared to conventional fractionation. Contrary, the most recent studies, published by Moreno et al and Samstein et al, did not reveal any significant differences between fractionation schemes with respect to local control. However, population sizes were very limited in these 4 studies, precluding any definitive conclusions regarding the most optimal fractionation schedule.…”

“…[22] The overall prognosis thus remain grim and most of the patients succumb to distant metastasis in spite of achieving a clear surgical margins of resection. [23,24] CONCLUSION Mucosal melanoma of the nose and paranasal sinus are rare tumours with an adverse clinical outcome. The prognosis of these tumours have not improved significantly over the past.…”
