Location-based crowdsourcing of hyperlocal news

Abstract: We studied the mobile users' preferences and concerns of using location-based assignments (LBA) and geotagging in crowdsourced news making. First, nine readers who had submitted reader's phtos were interviewed about their perceptions of LBA and geotagging scenarios. Second, a quasi-experiment in field conditions was carried out with nineteen participants. After completing four LBA tasks with a mobile phone, participants were interviewed on their perceptions and asked to complete a questionnaire on their prefer… Show more

“…Individuals, who are at or close to a particular location, are called to carry out a task that is bound to the respective location (Bauer et al, 2014). LBCS projects are implemented as, for instance, locationbased games with the purpose to collect urban data (Celino et al, 2012), location-based services in cities (Bentley et al, 2014), local news platforms (Väätäjä et al, 2012), and geographic information for disaster response (Goodchild and Glennon, 2010) etc. While, in LBCS, the location of the crowdsourcer may be relevant or not, the location of a crowdsourcee is significant (Bauer et al, 2014).…”

“…Crowdsourcing by using tasks develops a tighter relationship between the users and the organization and it is also a very costeffective way to generate relevant news, something that is particularly appealing for the local press. The possible tasks can vary from writing a story, carrying out an interview, shooting a photo or a video, but in all of them the location of the user when the task is received matters greatly [25,26]. Additionally, studies indicate that incentives or other ways to be acknowledged are very relevant in this context.…”

“…To develop a set of indicators, we identified the central factors presented in the studies carried out by [20,26,[32][33][34]37]. The selection of these works from the academic literature to present our framework is due to the fact that these manuscripts present indicators or ideas that readily lead to indicators to assess the issues addressed in this paper.…”

“…The eBird (https://ebird.org) project [100] is one of the earliest SC-based applications for collecting information about bird sightings from the bird-watching enthusiasts. SC is also referred in the literature by the following phrases: "Place-Centric Crowdsourcing" [21,59,116], "Location-based Crowdsourcing" [2,7,117], "Participatory Sensing" [10,32,40], "Mobile Crowdsourcing" [11,127], and "Mobile Crowdsensing" [44,124]. To elaborate, "Participatory Sensing" and "Mobile Crowdsensing" belong to a subset of SC, that involves utilization of smartphones of users to collect the different sensor data of the smartphones at different locations.…”
