“…The time from transplantation to the first tumor occurrence of 5 years in our study is consistent with previous results ( 9 , 14 , 16 ). However, most recent studies indicate that this period was shortening and was as short as 3.75 years ( 13 , 24 ).…”

“…Although most clinical studies in RTRs pointed to a higher incidence of cSCC than of BCC ( 10 , 15 - 18 ), some studies showed a higher incidence of BCC ( 5 , 13 , 19 ). The incidence of cSCC was higher in studies from Mexico, Brazil, Australia, and some European countries ( 6 , 8 , 10 , 14 , 16 - 18 ), while BCC was more frequent in the Mediterranean part of Europe ( 5 , 9 , 13 , 19 ). Higher BCC prevalence in our RTRs might also be explained by a high-level screening of patients before and after transplantation in our Center, whereby precancerous lesions (cSCC precursors) are diagnosed and treated early.…”

“…57 Risk factors include age at the time of transplant, lighter skin, sun exposure history, previous NMSC diagnosis, viral infection, and genetic markers, but also the regimen used for immunosuppression. 57,60,61 While all immunosuppressive drugs can increase the risk of infection and malignancy, in one retrospective study of solid organ recipients, the rate of NMSC was higher in patients who received prednisone, cyclosporine A, and azathioprine. 62 Retrospective reviews and prospective randomized trials have shown that organ transplant recipients who switch to mammalian target-of-rapamycin inhibitors, such as sirolimus and everolimus, have a lower incidence of NMSC.…”

“…Even if the most part of the literature agrees in considering sun exposure an independent risk factor for MNSC [20,21] in transplanted patients, as demonstrated by the greater prevalence of NMSC in sunexposed area. Particularly, Belloni-Fortina A et al [5] reported a higher incidence in patients with phototype II-III (73.91%)as compared to patients with phototype IV-V (26.08%) (p<0.05).…”
