Lock-in or lock-out? How structural properties of knowledge networks affect regional resilience

Abstract: The paper develops an evolutionary framework of regional resilience with a primary focus on the structural properties of local knowledge networks. After a presentation of the network-based rationales of growth and structuring of clusters, we analyze under which structural conditions a regional cluster can mix short run competitiveness without compromising long run resilience capabilities. We show that degree distribution (the level of hierarchy) and degree correlation (the level of structural homophily) of reg… Show more

“…Destinations are of great interest since they represent a decisive component regarding most of the current challenges that tourism faces (Barrado, 2004;Vera et al, 2011) especially at a local scale. Relationships among the actors involved in the development and promotion of a destination generate different degrees of cohesion and stability with regard to touristic activity (Novelli et al, 2006;Merinero and Pulido, 2009;Crespo et al, 2014). The value chain of destinations is related to connections among socio-institutional actors, relationship networks and immediate/distant environment.…”

“…Some authors (Martin & Sunley, 2003;Hassink, 2005Hassink, , 2010Malmberg & Maskell, 2007;Crespo, Suire, & Vicente, 2013) have dealt, in particular, with the theme of the evolution of the cluster in relationship with the aspect of the danger of the phenomena of technological lock-in. This phenomenon may affect the clusters in the phase of maturity in the sphere of which the production processes and innovation are connected with production and local practices surpassed by technological innovations developed in other contexts.…”
