Locomotive syndrome: clinical perspectives

Abstract: The deterioration of locomotive components, which comprise bones, joints, and intervertebral discs, and muscles and nerves, can lead to symptoms such as pain, limitations in the range of joint mobility, malalignment, impaired balance, and difficulty walking. Locomotive syndrome (LoS) was proposed by the Japanese Orthopedic Association in 2007 as a concept for people who are at a high risk of developing a musculoskeletal ambulation disability attributed to locomotor organs. Although many international articles … Show more

“…Although the original concept of LS included musculoskeletal disorders such as osteoarthritis, spondylosis and osteoporosis, recent studies have indicated that LS involves psychological disorders as well (Ikemoto et al, 2016;Nakamura et al, 2017a). Previous studies also indicated that LS, frailty and sarcopenia may contribute similarly in terms of the physical aspect of functional decline among older individuals (Ikemoto & Arai, 2018;Yoshimura et al, 2019).…”

“…LS is proposed as a disorder that predominantly affects people who are at a high risk of developing a musculoskeletal ambulation disability attributed to locomotor organ diseases [28]. In LS, the locomotive system consists of three main components: (1) bones, (2) joints and intervertebral discs, and (3) muscles and nerves [29]. LS refers to the conditions under which the elderly have been receiving care services, or high-risk conditions under which they may soon require care services linked to problems in their locomotive organs [30].…”

“…The con-current criterion validity was conducted between GLFS25 and EQ-5D (European Quality of Life-5 dimensions) and its Pearson correlation coefficient was found as 0.86. The cut-off score for diagnosis of LS was set at 16 (sensitiv-ity=0.88, specificity=0.84) in Iranian elders [14]. The obtained data were presented with descriptive statistics.…”
