Locus of control, consistency of vocational interest patterns, and academic achievement.

Abstract: Administered the SVIB, the W. James I-E Scale, and the American College Testing Program Examination (ACT) to 356 male university freshmen. Ss were classified as internals or externals on locus of control and as consistents or inconsistents on vocational patterns based on J. Holland's classification schema for scales on the SVIB. ACT scores were used to control for ability. Internals had a significantly higher GPA than externals; consistents had a higher GPA than inconsistents, but no significant interaction ef… Show more

“…Research producing negative findings has been reported in the literature (Bates, Parker, & McCoy, 1970;Frantz & Walsh, 1972;Hughes, 1972;Schaefer, 1976). Positive or mixed support of consistency has been reported (Foster & Gade, 1973;Gottfredson, 1977;Holland, 1968;Holland, Sorensen, Clark, Nafziger, & Blum 1973;Nafziger, Holland, Helms, & McPartland, 1974;O'Neil, 1976O'Neil, ,1977O'Neil & Magoon, 1977). The construct of consistency needs more examination and clarification (Holland, 1973(Holland, ,1976, and Dolliver and Hansen (1977) suggest that clients may wish to talk with counselors about the meaning of inconsistent codes.…”

“…Research on locus of control, for example, has shown that poor students tend to regard most of their personal outcomes (whether academic or not) as essentially uncontrollable (cf. Brown & Strickland, 1972;Foster & Gade, 1973;Prociuk & Breen, 1975). 1 Several studies have also demonstrated the influence of a selfserving bias on causal attributions for academic performance (cf.…”

“…. Other research, however, has supported such a construct (Foster & Gade, 1973;Nafziger, Holland, Helms, & McPartland, 1974;O'Neil & Magoon, 1977;O'Neil, Magoon, & Tracy, 1978). In addition, Holland has shown that the consistency of a student's personality pattern, as measured by the Vocational Preference Invent09 (VPI) profile, is positively related to the stability of a student's vocational choice or choice of a major field over I-to-4-year intervals (Holland, 1963(Holland, , 1968).…”
