Logometro®: The psychometric properties of a norm-referenced digital battery for language assessment of Greek-speaking 4–7 years old children

Abstract: In educational and clinical settings, few norm-referenced tests have been utilized until now usually focusing on a single or a few language subcomponents, along with very few language rating scales for parents and educators. The need for a comprehensive language assessment tool for preschool and early school years children which could form the basis for valid and reliable screening and diagnostic decisions, led to the development of a new norm-referenced digital tool called Logometro®. The aim of the present s… Show more

“…In recent years, online assessments of children's language and literacy skills, such as vocabulary knowledge and word reading, have become increasingly prevalent in research and practice in psychology, education, and speech-language pathology (e.g., Hautala et al, 2020;Hoskins et al, 2021;Manning et al, 2020;Varga et al, 2022;Yeatman et al, 2021). Several online screening tools for language and literacy difficulties (e.g., dyslexia, developmental language disorder) have also appeared (Asselborn et al, 2018;Guinet & Kander, 2010;Hulme et al, 2024;Hurford & Wines, 2021;Zugarramurdi et al, 2022), and this trend seems to be accelerating in response to the COVID pandemic worldwide (Antoniou et al, 2022;Castilla-Earls et al, 2022;Ho et al, 2023). To date, however, there is a paucity of evidence regarding the psychometric properties (i.e., reliability and validity) of online language and literacy assessments.…”

“…To date, however, there is a paucity of evidence regarding the psychometric properties (i.e., reliability and validity) of online language and literacy assessments. This raises questions about their applicability to scientific research and clinical practice (for relevant discussions, see Antoniou et al, 2022;Magimairaj et al, 2022;Peña & Sutherland, 2022). This problem is particularly salient for handwriting and spelling assessments, which are typically administered in person with paper and pencil (see, e.g., Ho et al, 2007;Wechsler, 2001;Wilkinson & Robertson, 2006, for standardized tests of handwriting; see also Asselborn et al, 2018, for an adaptation of a tablet-based test for handwriting disabilities).…”

“…Additionally, the development of definitional skills is related to the enhancement of literacy skills, and they also predict school success (Artuso, Palladino, Valentini, & Belacchi, 2022). For these reasons, definitions are used in many diagnostic tests (Wechsler, 2014;Antoniou, Ralli, Mouzaki, Diamanti & Papaioannou, 2022) as a measure of vocabulary knowledge. Apart from the development of morphosyntax and literacy, VK, predominantly breath of this knowledge, has been found to correlate with verbal working memory in both monolinguals and bilingual speakers (Cockcroft, 2016;Korecky-Kröll et al, 2019).…”

“…To address the early identification and support of children vulnerable to reading and spelling difficulties, it is imperative to transcend the prevailing reactive approach and broaden our efforts by creating and implementing preventative strategies (Murphy et al, 2016). Effective implementation of evidence-based instructional practices and progress monitoring assessments is paramount, particularly in early childhood education, necessitating the use of accurate and valid assessment tools (Gorman et al, 2016;Antoniou et al, 2022). Embracing principles of primary and secondary prevention, it is crucial to detect the underlying causes and initial indicators of future reading challenges at the earliest possible stage, well before these difficulties manifest.…”
