“…Older adults who are detached from relevant others often experience significant levels of loneliness, which has been underscored as a prime risk factor for poor emotional functioning and psychological distress 12 , 60 mainly due to negative perceptions of the social environment, lack of confidence, and poor self-esteem. Increased levels of mental dysfunction are frequently and statistically related to severe sleep difficulties in old age 30 , 58 . Thus, the growth of loneliness and the associated mental distress sequelae in old age may lead to intense suboptimal quality sleep 14 .…”

“…In addition, two systematic reviews of nine and 51 studies each concluded that mental health problems such as depression and anxiety increase sleep disturbance 28,29 . In turn, loneliness and mental distress have been shown in multiple crosssectional and longitudinal studies to be associated with an increased risk of poor sleep, although the relationship could be bidirectional [30][31][32] . Thus, there is a possibility that poor sleep quality may lead to loneliness and social isolation, particularly in later life.…”

“…"A pervasive urge to develop and sustain at least a minimum number of permanent, positive, and substantial interpersonal relationships" is what this urge to belong implies. As a result, people who have continuous issues forming and maintaining satisfactory relationships with others, and hence have difficulty meeting their belongingness requirements, are more prone to feel deprived, manifesting as disturbances like loneliness, despair, anxiety, and rage (Henderson et al, 2021).…”

“…In addition to biological factors, the environment and social relationships seem to have an effect on sleep quality (Shochat et al, 2014). Sleep quality issues are more common among people who are socially isolated or otherwise unhappy with their social relationships, so loneliness plays a key part on sleep quality (Henderson et al, 2021). In a study conducted by Smith et al, (2012), there was a notable positive relationship between loneliness and sleep quality related issues.…”

“…Sleep, as a behavior or process, is implicated in each of these conditions [ [13] , [14] , [15] , [16] ]. In our previous work done in partnership with the Blackfeet community prior to the onset of the pandemic, we found that in a sample of Blackfeet adults, average sleep duration was only 6 h [ 41 ], and short sleep duration is defined as less than 7 h of sleep in a 24-h period [ 42 ]. As such, it is possible that sleep is a behavior which may contribute to existing health disparities in the Blackfeet community, and changes in sleep in response to life events may exacerbate already high incidence of chronic mental and physical health conditions.…”
