Long-Acting Ultraviolet-Blocking Mechanism of Lignin: Generation and Transformation of Semiquinone Radicals

Abstract: The natural inspired ultraviolet (UV)-absorbing function of lignin has been widely used in cosmetics and photothermal materials; however, its long-acting UV-blocking mechanism is still unclear. Herein, three organosolv lignins (OLs) were extracted from different botanical resources under mild conditions. These OLs preserved the native structure of lignin, and the best one was chosen to investigate the long-acting UV-blocking mechanism of lignin from the perspective of radicals. Results showed that 136% fresh s… Show more

“…AL is easily photo‐oxidized into semiquinone radials, which further transforms into hydroquinone structure and the UV‐absorbing ability as well as SPF value improves correspondingly. [ 19 ] In contrast, the transmittance of AL‐SP 3 based sunscreens in both UVB and UVA regions decreases significantly after UV irradiation (Figure 5c). When the dosage of AL‐SP 3 is 10 wt.%, the transmittance in UVB and UVA region decreases from 7.8% to 9.7% 9.7%–13.7% to 1.2%–1.6%, and 1.6% to 6.77%, respectively.…”

“…[13][14][15][16][17][18] When lignin is exposed to UV irradiation, semiquinone radicals would be formed and reversibly transformed into quinone and hydroquinone by absorbing and releasing UV energy. [19,20] However, most of the units in lignin are unconjugated, its absorbance in UVA region could be neglected, while the absorbance in UVB region is also limited due to the irregular aggregation. [21,22] The sunscreen containing 10 wt.% organosolv lignin (OL) provides a sun protection factor (SPF) value of 8.66, which cannot meet the daily sunscreen requirement.…”

“…Recent studies related to the UV-absorbance of lignin for sunscreen applications found that the UV-absorbance of lignin could intensify with UV exposure. , The formation of semiquinone radicals upon UV irradiation, which can dynamically transform into quinone and hydroquinone structures, is suggested to be the reason for this observation . In turn, it was suggested that the formation of Q and HQ would, respectively, improve the UV absorption.…”

“…The semiquinone would further be oxidized into quinone or reduced into hydroquinone, both of which are reversible. [38,39] When the semiquinone-quinone-hydroquinone transformation in lignin couples with metal redox, the adhesion of lignin-based hydrogel would be enhanced and long active. [40] In the meanwhile, the metal redox would be accelerated.…”
