Long COVID symptoms and duration in SARS-CoV-2 positive children — a nationwide cohort study

Abstract: Most children have a mild course of acute COVID-19. Only few mainly non-controlled studies with small sample size have evaluated long-term recovery from SARS-CoV-2 infection in children. The aim of this study was to evaluate symptoms and duration of ‘long COVID’ in children. A nationwide cohort study of 37,522 children aged 0–17 years with RT-PCR verified SARS-CoV-2 infection (response rate 44.9%) and a control group of 78,037 children (response rate 21.3%). An electronic questionnaire was sent to all children… Show more

“…It would be instructive to determine if these same predictors identified those predisposed to severe COVID-19 and/or “long-haul” COVID as well. Youth infected with SARS-CoV-2 do report more symptoms than controls at follow up 28 , and in a recent study dealing with recovery from COVID, reactivation of latent EBV and SARS-CoV-2 RNAemia were predictors of post-acute sequelae of covid-19 (PASC), and those reporting gastrointestinal PASC, SARS-CoV-2-specific and CMV-specific CD8+ T cells exhibited unique dynamics 29 .…”

“…Schools can help in this process through the reinforcement of ritualization and normalization of hygiene habits [ 131 , 132 ]. Moreover, even though “long covid” (e.g., manifestation of persistent long-term symptoms after the acute infection) has been more frequently reported among adult patients, in children the disease could affect their cognitive development, which has been already compromised during the pandemic due to delayed education, isolation, increase in poverty and food security, among other factors [ 133 , 134 ]. In that sense, the provision of hygiene infrastructure in schools should not be overlooked.…”

“…The prevalence of at least one symptom at 3 months of follow-up was 66.5% in test-positives versus 53.4% in test-negatives and 30.3% versus 16.2% respectively for three or more symptoms. These results must be interpreted with appropriate caution, as only 13% of the eligible test-positive and test-negative population responded to the survey, a limitation that also complicates interpretation of the incidence data from a nationwide study in Denmark [ 35 ].…”
