Long-distance spread of Tembusu virus, and its dispersal in local mosquitoes and domestic poultry in Chongming Island, China

Abstract: Background Chongming Island in China serves as a breeding and shelter point on the East Asian–Australasian Flyway. The resting frequency of migratory birds, abundance of mosquito populations, and the popular domestic poultry industry pose a potential risk of mosquito-borne zoonotic diseases. The aim of this study is to explore the role of migratory birds in the spread of mosquito-borne pathogens and their prevalent status on the island. Methods We … Show more

“…In addition, the composition of TMUV cluster 4 raised the intriguing possibility of TMUV evading geographic barriers through long-distance spreading facilitated by migratory birds from Southeast Asia to Taiwan. This concept has been postulated in a recent study ( Fang et al, 2023 ), adding further support to the notion of potential virus dissemination through wild bird migration.…”

“…It has been reported that TMUV was successfully isolated from mosquitoes in Malaysia in 1950s ( 17 ). Subsequently, the virus spread and has been reported in many countries globally ( 1 , 2 , 4 , 7 , 11 , 18 ). Understanding infection is important in creating strategies to control the disease.…”

“…The nucleotide sequences from the Vietnamese TMUV strains identified in this study were aligned using the Bioedit software supplemented with Clustal W (14,15). Nucleotide identity among the Vietnamese and other sequences downloaded in GenBank were identified using the Basic Local Alignment Search Tool (BLAST) 1 and the GENETYX version 10.0 software (GENETYX Corp.; Tokyo, Japan). In total, 40 and 38 sequences of the E and prM genes, respectively, from different TMUV strains from GenBank (Table 2) were used to construct phylogenetic trees and further conduct genetic characterization of the viral strains.…”

“…The morbidity in adult ducks ranges from 10% to 30%, while in ducklings, it can reach 90% to 100%, with a mortality rate of 5% to 30% [8]. Some studies have shown that DTMUV has a broad host range and various transmission routes, including vertical transmission [9] and mosquito-borne transmission [10], as well as direct contact and airborne transmission [11,12]. Besides infecting ducks, it can also infect chickens, geese, pigeons, and sparrows [13][14][15].…”
