“…However, investigations focusing on the dynamics of whole zooplankton communities have been based mainly on freshwater ecosystems (Keitt et al ; Keitt ; Vasseur et al ), so there is a scarcity of studies dealing with zooplankton dynamics of natural marine populations. A previous analysis of the dataset used in the present work described significant changes on the zooplankton community (Buttay et al ). More precisely, an important increase of the abundance of the whole zooplankton community as well as all the main taxa studied was observed from 2001 onwards.…”

“…On the other hand, Valdés et al. () showed a significant reduction in primary production in a transect situated in Cantabrian Sea in the period 1993–2003 and Buttay, Miranda, Casas, González‐Quirós, and Nogueira () found that total zooplankton abundance in the Ría de Vigo and adjacent shelf declined between 1995 and 2001. In this sense, although not in all the subareas analyzed, there is a decrease in the production of the system related to the decrease in the upwelling, there seems to be a modification related to the environmental regime shift of mid‐1990s.…”

“…Cnidarians are not very abundant in zooplankton community in Galicia (Buttay et al, 2015). Thus, these results could suggest selective predation on cnidarians, as also observed in turtles and sunfish (Dodge et al, 2011; Sousa et al, 2016).…”
