“…Evaporated signatures of the isotopic compositions for some of this ground water in the basin centers and their similarities with the rain water from the area and the GNIP site in Chihuahua and surface water from the Rio Grande suggest that this water was probably recharged under warmer climate. However, other ground water with lighter δ 18 O isotopes in the basin margins and basin centers was probably formed under cooler and wetter conditions during the pluvial periods of the late Pleistocene (25,000 to 14,000 years before present) when recharge rates were considerably higher (Swift 1993). This interpretation is consistent with their low 14 C values, an absence of tritium, and the occurrences of similar older ground water in adjacent Ryan Flat (Bartolino 1997) and other basins of Trans‐Pecos Texas (Scanlon et al 2001) formed by similar tectonic processes.…”
