Long-Term Cultivation of Algae in Open-Raceway Ponds: Lessons from the Field

Abstract: Sapphire Energy's Columbus Algal Biomass (CAB) Farm usesopen pond cultivation with a proprietary harvesting method to produce algal biomass. Its successful construction and operation has demonstrated the critical integration of traditional agricultural techniques with algae cultivation knowledge for algal biomass production. The aim of this article is to describe Sapphire Energy's two primary research sites in New Mexico-CAB Farm and Las Cruces Test Site (LCTS). It focuses on the key contributions and the less… Show more

“…Raceway pond has been perceived as one of the best open pond cultivation design available due to its energy efficiency, as a single paddlewheel is sufficient enough to properly agitate a 5-hectare raceway pond [18]. One of the successful raceway pond cultivation is by Sapphire Energy's Columbus Algal Biomass Farm located at Columbus, United States, which has successfully produced 520 metric tonnes of dried microalgae biomass during 2 years of its operation without any technical issue [19].…”

“…88 and dissolved organic compounds in cultures of Scenedesmus. 86 A recent report from the company Sapphire Energy Inc. (San Diego) suggests that more than 97% of their process water is recycled at their pilot facility, 94 and it is mainly coming from the primary dewatering step using dissolved air flotation of algal biomass (4-7% solids). The rest of the water removed during secondary dewatering via centrifugation is sent to evaporation ponds.…”
