Long term effect of hypermetropic anisometropia on the visual acuity of treated amblyopic eyes

Abstract: Aim-To evaluate the eVect of the extent of hypermetropic anisometropia on the long term visual acuity results in amblyopic eyes following their treatment by occlusion. Methods-The visual acuity of 86 patients, who had been treated for unilateral amblyopia by occlusion of the fellow eye and followed up at least to the age of 9 years, was examined 6.4 years, on average, after cessation of treatment. Patients were divided into two groups-those with a small amount of hypermetropic anisometropia, where the spherica… Show more

“…Patients with treated anisometropic amblyopia appear to be more likely to deteriorate following the cessation of treatment if they have anisometropia greater than 1.75 diopters. 95 The effect of age on treatment response is unclear. Cobb and associates 96 studied 112 patients with anisometropic amblyopia who were treated and found that the presenting degree of anisometropia and amblyopia correlated with the final visual outcome, but that age had no effect.…”

“…Bom número de crianças chegam à escola com certo grau de hipermetropia e, ao esforço visual, manifestam-se sintomas, nem sempre explícitos. Os mais freqüentes são dificuldade de concentração, cansaço, astenopia e sono aos esforços mais constantes 8,9,12,13 . Para facilitar o estudo da correção óptica, classificam-se as hipermetropias em quatro grupos: fraca, moderada, forte e anisometropia cujos valores dióptricos são dependentes da idade do paciente.…”

“…Our 6-month outcomes cannot provide information on the ultimate outcome of our amblyopia treatment. Deterioration in VA has been reported in longterm retrospective studies [48,49]. Regression can occur following the cessation of treatment, thereby reducing the lifetime benefit of therapy.…”
