“…Although precocious males are larger in size and have higher gonadosomatic index (GSI) values during their first year of life, they show a reduced body size with respect to their counterparts over their second year of life [11,12]. The effect of photoperiod on sexual maturation, somatic growth and hormonal aspects has been studied in this species for more than three decades now [7,11,[13][14][15][16][17][18][19][20][21]. Recently, the analysis of the effect of discrete windows of continuous light (LL, 24 h light/day) on sexual maturation has shown that LL regimes reduce precocious gonadal maturation in juvenile male sea bass during their first year of life [5,11,19,20,21].…”

“…Artificial photoperiods have been reported to be an 2 effective method for delaying sea bass puberty (Zanuy et al, 2001) and/or altering spawning time 3 (Carrillo et al, 1993). In later studies (Rodríguez et inhibiting early precocity (Beghtashi et al, 2004), and for dramatically reducing the levels of 13 several reproductive hormones (Rodríguez et al, 2005). However, and despite their importance, no 14 data are yet available concerning the daily rhythms of reproductive hormones in fish kept under LL.…”

“…In the present study, the observed increase of plasma LH levels from the beginning of sex differentiation toward the end of the studied period, when males were spermiating, confirms this role. Moreover, the profile of LH in the male population correlated well with the presence of precocious males and the progressive increase of plasma 11 KT , which is the regulator of spermatogenesis in teleosts (Amer et al, 2001;Kobayashi et al, 1991;Miura et al, 1991;Schulz and Miura, 2002;Rodríguez et al, 2005). On the contrary, LH plasma levels in the female population did not correlate well with pituitary transcription or synthesis of LH, in agreement with the absence of significant increases, at this time, of plasma E2 and the presence of only primary oocytes in the ovaries .…”
