Long-Term Fitness Training Improves the Circadian Rest-Activity Rhythm in Healthy Elderly Males

Abstract: In old age, the circadian timing system loses optimal functioning. This process is even accelerated in Alzheimer's disease. Because pharmacological treatment of day-night rhythm disturbances usually is not very effective and may have considerable side effects, nonpharmacological treatments deserve attention. Bright light therapy has been shown to be effective. It is known from animal studies that increased activity, or an associated process, also strongly affects the circadian timing system, and the present st… Show more

“…15 However when nonparametric measures of activity rhythm are needed (e.g., the intradaily variability and interdaily stability), at least 7 days of continuous measurement is recommended. 55 Of the studies included in this review, 24 of 31 studies used continuous measurement for at least 3 days.…”

“…Assessment of circadian rhythms using wheel-running activity is analogous to the rest-activity rhythms used to examine circadian rhythms in humans (van Someren et al 1996(van Someren et al , 1997. In this study, mice of three ages (2 , 7 and 12 months) were allowed free access to running wheels for a period of 16 days.…”

“…49 Direction of causality cannot be determined in this study, but regular practice of physical activity may contribute to endogenous circadian amplitude and may have a synchronizing effect on circadian rhythms. 32,50,51 Beneficial effects of physical activity may thus extend beyond increasing physical fitness, and positively impact on circadian physiology to improve quality of life and decrease mortality in COPD patients.…”

“…In another study, a mean RA of 0.86 (±0.02) was reported in ten older (73±1.5 years) healthy men. 32 RA higher than 0.85 thus seems to be representative of healthier older individuals, but larger studies will be needed to determine a valid "normal" threshold in different age-groups.…”
