“…It appears that this animal model is suitable for research into the pathophysiology of solvent-induced psychosis and development of effective treatment approaches. In order to verify the predictive validity of this model, evaluation of the effects of antipsychotics, such as haloperidol, carbamazepine (Hernandez-Avila et al 1998) or clozapine (Shu and Tsai 2003), which are partially effective for treatment of toluene psychotic patients is needed. Additionally, these results highlight the need for further research to improve understanding of the effects of solvent abuse on the developing nervous system and the potentially enduring effects resulting from juvenile exposure.…”

“…Centre. This has also been found to be a risk factor in other research focusing on VSA among youth (e.g., Bennett et al, 2000;Shu & Tsai, 2003). Low levels of education were also reported as a risk factor for VSA by half (50%) o f the participants in this study.…”

“…Findings are similar within the literature that looks specifically at VSA among youth. The use o f volatile solvents has been associated with poor academic performance, high rates o f absenteeism, suspension/ expulsion, school dropout, learning difficulties, and declining interests in school activities (Bennett et al, 2000;Mosher et al, 2004;Basu et al, 2004;Ballard, 1998;Maruff, Bums, Tyler, Currie, & Currie, 1998;Carroll et al, 1998;Shu & Tsai, 2003).…”

“…The common toxicities encountered in solvent abusers are listed in Table 6.3 . Functional deterioration characterized by impairment of intelligence was also observed among these subjects, and some abusers also developed psychosis (49) . Another possibility is that volatiles potentiate hyperpolarization of γ -aminobutyric acid receptors (GABA receptors).…”
