Long-Term Health Symptoms and Sequelae Following SARS-CoV-2 Infection: An Evidence Map

Abstract: Post-COVID-19 conditions, also known as ‘Long-COVID-19’, describe a longer and more complex course of illness than acute COVID-19 with no widely accepted uniform case definition. We aimed to map the available evidence on persistent symptoms and sequelae following SARS-CoV-2 in children and adults. We searched the Cochrane COVID-19 Study Register and the WHO COVID-19 Global literature on coronavirus disease database on 5 November 2021. We included longitudinal and cross-sectional studies and we extracted their … Show more

“…In contrast, the set of complaints in the group of patients with persisting complaints is respiratory symptoms, neurological symptoms, fatigue, pain, mental dysfunction, cardiovascular dysfunction, post-exertion symptoms, and cognitive dysfunction. Furthermore, the early onset of orthostatic intolerance symptoms has been described [ 5 , 6 , 7 ]. The name of this set of persisting complaints has not yet been clearly defined and is called “long” COVID, long-haul COVID, chronic COVID, post-COVID syndrome and even post-acute sequelae of a SARS-CoV-2 infection (PASC) [ 1 , 7 ].…”

“…Most studies focused on the prevalence of individual symptoms (e.g., anosmia, fatigue, etc.). In this systematic review, we aim to describe the findings of studies assessing key outcomes related to wellbeing and recovery in children and adolescents using the evidence derived from our evidence map [ 18 ].…”

“…However, these approaches fail to address less severe non-hospital demanding cases and may thus underestimate risk of infection. Considering reports on delayed return to work 17 and of post Covid-19 conditions with persistent ill health following cases without acute critical disease 18 , this is of importance not the least in occupations with many young and healthy employees who are less likely to be hospitalized but at equal or higher risk of infection.…”
