Long-Term Hearing Outcomes After Ossiculoplasty in Comparison to Short-Term Outcomes

Abstract: The hearing outcomes after ossiculoplasty showed significant deterioration on long-term follow-up. Innovative approaches to the management of cholesteatoma/atelectasis are necessary to improve and stabilize long-term hearing outcomes.

“…Besides the condition of the stapes, many factors, such as disease severity, follow-up period, eustachian tube function and surgical technique, affect the outcome of ossiculoplasty 17 , 18 . The treatment of different pathological conditions is beyond the scope of this article; rather, we discuss those patients for whom ossiculoplasty was necessary to improve hearing and review their long-term outcomes.…”

“…Persistent disease, such as cholesteatoma, atelectasis and eustachian tube dysfunction, is one of the most important factors affecting the longterm outcome of ossiculoplasty. 31 In addition, extrusion or absorption of prosthetic material may occur over a long period of time. 32 Mishiro et al 31 analysed the outcomes of ossiculoplasty after six months and after five years, and found a significant difference between results at these two time points.…”

“…First, these are only short-term outcomes with an average follow-up of 3 months. The long-term fate of hearing after ossiculoplasty is not well understood, yet there is seems to be a general trend among related reports that hearing, on average, may slightly regress over time (31,32). Thus, it is possible that the current cohort may have failed to meet the predicted hearing benchmark if followed up to 11 months, which was the mean follow-up in the OOPS report.…”
