Long-term incidence of glioma in Olmsted County, Minnesota, and disparities in postglioma survival rate: a population-based study

Abstract: Background We assessed glioma incidence and disparities in postglioma survival rate in the Olmsted County, Minnesota, population. Methods This population-based study assessed the incidence of pathologically confirmed primary gliomas between January 1, 1995, and December 31, 2014. Age- and sex-adjusted incidence rates per 100 000 person-years were calculated and standardized to the US white 2010 population. We compared inciden… Show more

“…In the same geographic population, the adjusted incidence rate of glioma for all ages is 5.51 per 100,000 inhabitants, 10 times higher than F I G U R E 2 Patient 10 (A1-A4) brain magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) axial fluid-attenuated inversion recovery (demonstrates a large heterogeneous left hemisphere lesion with extensive edema and prominent involvement of the corpus callosum (A1) with heterogenous contrast enhancement on axial T1 post-contrast MRI (A2). Apparent diffusion coefficient indicated mild diffusion restriction, predominantly along the margin of the T2 hyperintensity in the frontal and parietal lobes (A3 TD incidence [22,23]. Moreover, an incidence rate of 11.1 per 100,000 population per year was reported for brain metastases over 34 years from 1935 to 1968 in our region, which is higher than the incidence of MS, glioma, and TD in Olmsted County [24].…”

“…The differential diagnosis of patients presenting with TD lesions encompasses a broad spectrum of diseases. “…Moreover, cancer patients with lower SES have worse survival prospects [ 31 ]. The few published studies investigating equality of care for brain tumor patients point in the same direction [ 32 34 ]. To counteract this, equality in health and care is an expressed goal for the ongoing Swedish Cancer Plan, which is based on governmental guidelines and executed by the Regional Cancer Centres in Sweden [ 35 ].…”
