Long-Term Monitoring of Water Dynamics in the Sahel Region Using the Multi-Sar-System

Abstract: ABSTRACT:Fresh water is a scarce resource in the West-African Sahel region, seasonally influenced by droughts and floods. Particularly in terms of climate change, the importance of wetlands increases for flora, fauna, human population, agriculture, livestock and fishery. Hence, access to open water is a key factor. Long-term monitoring of water dynamics is of great importance, especially with regard to the spatio-temporal extend of wetlands and drylands. It can predict future trends and facilitate the developm… Show more

“…The crosspolarization VH, on the contrary, is dominated by the volume scattering effect that can be observed in backscattering volumes like high vegetation, like forests. The originally complex images are preprocessed by the multi-SAR processor of DLR [49]. It calculates the four Kennaugh elements k 0 , k 1 , k 5 , and k 8 and therewith assures an information-preserving representation of the polarimetric information [50].…”

“…Long time series that use data of higher temporal resolution start in the early 2000s and use MODIS data from Terra, Aqua, or often both. With the launch of the Sentinel fleet, more and more studies include Sentinel-1-especially-for shorter, but mostly weather independent, high-resolution time series of surface water [4,25,39,74,[102][103][104][105][106][107][108][109][110][111]. Additionally, Sentinel-2 is often used for high spatial and temporal resolution time series, or as validation data [9,24,39,100,110,[112][113][114][115][116][117][118][119].…”

“…Thanks to the chosen geometric and radiometric frames, the fusion requirements are already fulfilled by the pre-processing steps. The delivered SAR data processed in the Multi-SAR framework (Bertram et al, 2016), the optical data sets provided by the Sentinel-2 mission, and the aerial image mosaic (LDBV 2018) can directly be used. Minor deviations resulting from an outdated or coarse digital elevation model might potentially occur but are not addressed in this article.…”

“…The idea is to establish a simple but consistent mathematical description which supports both the fusion of several SAR images and the fusion of SAR with optical data. The Kennaugh framework is already in use for polarimetric decomposition and data preparation and has proven to be suitable in diverse applications (Schmitt and Brisco, 2013;Moser et al, 2015;Bertram et al, 2016). Its advantage is the consistent preparation of all SAR data independent of sensor, mode and polarization.…”
