Long-Term Outcome of Laparoscopic Nissen Procedure in Pediatric Patients with Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease Measured Using the Modified QPSG Roma III European Society for Pediatric Gastroenterology Hepatology and Nutrition's Questionnaire

Abstract: Our experience shows that the long-term follow-up after LF produces a good clinical result and a good quality of life. The modified ESPGHAN's Roma III questionnaire seems an effective way to check the long-term results, because it avoids submitting patients to long and not well tolerated instrumental exams.

“…There also seem to be more reports of recurrence after LNF. Although the recurrence rate in our series was low compared with other reports in the literature [15,[18][19][20], we were not able to compare LTF with LNF in this series because of sample size discrepancy. As belching is known to be associated with easing unwanted reflex coughing, gas bloat syndrome, and respiratory problems [21], the Toupet fundoplication would seem to suppress pressure build-up around the cardia which prevents suture dehiscence and slipping that could cause recurrence of GERD.…”

“…[6][7][8][9] Because the laparoscopic procedure involves smaller incision and has fewer complications, [10] it is favored by both physicians and children's parents. Today, this technique is the new gold standard procedure to correct GER, [11] especially that with hiatal hernia.…”
