“…In Panicker's study, with on-table echocardiography showing no residual MR in both groups, it is interesting to see that the recurrence of ++/+++ MR at 5 years was 10/42 (23.1%) vs 11/70 (15.7%) in the rigid group vs flexible group, respectively. These interesting results for the flexible rings are in keeping with previously reported data [11] and once again support the reliability of the flexible rings in the context of degenerative MV disease. Kanemitsu et al have shown a freedom from recurrence of significant MR after flexible ring of 92.5 ± 2.2% at 10 years and 73.1 ± 7.1% at 15 years.…”

“…Because this patient was 19-years-old, MVR with a mechanical valve was acceptable from the viewpoint of valve durability, but with mental retardation, it was more convenient to plan avoidance of postoperative anticoagulant therapy. The surgeon in this case has performed more than 1500 cases of MVP, with a survival rate and 10-year freedom from reoperation of 89.3% AE 2.2% and 96.4% AE 1.4%, respectively; and 83.5% AE 3.2% and 95.3% AE 1.7%, respectively, 15 years after MVP in the usual cases of degenerative MR. 4 The long-term survival and reoperation-free rates were satisfactory, but in this case, the cause of MR was different from that of the usual adult patient. Long-term follow-up is necessary.…”

“…There were 8 patients who required reoperation, the cause of reoperation in 2 patients was dilated mitral annulus due to abnormal shape of the Duran ring, that caused in improper annular fixation. In study performed by Kanemitsu et al (6) , mortality rate and freedom from reoperation were not significant. The causes of reoperation in three patients were recurrent leaflet prolapse in two and leaflet sclerosis in one.…”
