Long-term outcomes of TVT and IVS operations for treatment of female stress urinary incontinence: monofilament vs. multifilament polypropylene tape

Abstract: TVT is an effective and stable treatment, whereas IVS has a significant inferior objective cure rate, and a significant decline in subjective cure rate occurred over time. A high rate of vaginal erosions was found in the IVS group. We cannot recommend the use of multifilament polypropylene tape (IVS) for surgical treatment of stress urinary incontinence.

“…Meshes out of multifilaments were not tested according to their higher rate of complications. 18,19 The analyzed anchors are MiniArc V R [MA] from AMS and PelFix [PF] from FEG Textiltechnik. Both comply to the standards set by the ICS/IUGA 2010.…”

“…It uses a type III multifilament polypropylene tension-free tape to create an artificial uterosacral neoligament thus anchoring the apex of the prolapsed vaginal vault 1. Cure rates show wide variation, being reported to be between 71% and 91% 24. Likewise complication rates show great variability.…”

“…Although reports of fistula formation following this procedure are rare, several different types have been reported, including rectovaginal,5 urethral-vaginal2 and ischiorecto-vaginal 6. Only a few cases of gluteo-vaginal fistulas have been described.…”

“…Midurethral tape operations have revolutionized the treatment of female stress urinary incontinence; however, the intravaginal slingplasty (IVS) operation has been abandoned as it frequently caused vaginal erosions and infections due to the multifilament polypropylene tape [1][2][3]. Despite the fact that nowadays only monofilament slings are used, previously inserted multifilament slings remain a clinical problem.…”
