Long‐term post‐treatment follow‐up of onychomycosis treated with terbinafine: a multicentre trial

Abstract: Between 1991 and 1993, 32 cases of fingernail mycosis and 20 cases of toenail mycosis caused by dermatophytes were treated with terbinafine. For 8 weeks, 250 mg of terbinafine was given daily for fingernail infections, and for 12 weeks the same dose was given for toenail involvement; the short-term follow-up was 24 and 48 weeks respectively. A long-term follow-up was performed twice, initially at 24 and then at 48 months after the end of the treatment. For fingernail mycosis, the mycological cure rate was 100%… Show more

“…Successful treatment has also been described in other zoo animal species with a range of topical and systemic antifungals (Rotstein and others 1999, Pollock and others 2000, Hahn and others 2003). More recently, treatment with oral terbinafine has been described in human beings for dermatophyte pedal onychomycosis (Török and others 1998) and in cats with M canis ringworm infections (Mancianti and others 1999, Nuttall and others 2008). Terbinafine is a new systemic antifungal drug that has been found to be more effective in cats with generalised dermatophytosis and dermatophyte mycetoma than previous therapies and requires a shorter treatment course with once‐daily dosing (Mancianti and others 1999).…”
