Long-term quality of life after transoral laser microsurgery for laryngeal carcinoma

Abstract: Patients treated with TLM present a very good long-term QOL. Only activity deteriorates over time, while voice and swallowing remain satisfactory in the majority of patients. J. Surg. Oncol. 2016;114:789-795. © 2016 2016 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.

“…The development of endolaryngeal robotic and laser supraglottic surgical procedures has resulted in fewer complications and morbidities than open surgery. Comparisons between open surgery and endolaryngeal laser surgery in terms of oncological success and functional results did not indicate any significant differences 3 , 9 , 18 , 30 , 31 …”

“…The author theorizes that the high expectations of minimal invasiveness created by TLM and the considerable percentage of patients that continue working without any official recognition of their disability may explain this discrepancy [108]. A third publication by Vals-Mateus shows that scores on voice and swallowing domains remain consistent over time and do not deteriorate [109•].…”

“…The work (Vilaseca et al, 2016) showed that 94% of 401 patients who underwent CO 2 TLM had a high quality of life one year after treatment. Another publication demonstrates that voice and swallowing function after this type of treatment remains unchanged over time and does not worsen (Valls et al, 2016).…”
