Long-Term Quality of Life Measures after Functional Endoscopic Sinus Surgery

Abstract: Our data indicate that functional endoscopic sinus surgery, combined with appropriate postoperative care, is effective at maintaining a significant improvement in the overall general health status of patients for at least 3 years after surgical intervention and that the overall scores return to a range of normative values for the general population.

“…In an attempt to limit bias during collection of QOL data, all survey responses were recorded directly by the patients on the study forms as it has been reported that 1 of the best methods to assess patient symptoms is to obtain them directly from the patient. 16 The intent of these analyses is to further supplement existing data by highlighting the significant, measureable direct side effects of chronic sinusitis and its symptoms. Because the results presented here are not intended to evaluate the effectiveness of transantral balloon dilation of the maxillary sinus ostium and ethmoid infundibulum relative to other CRS treatments, these study limitations should not prohibit clinicians, employers, and payers of health care claims from recognizing the degree of debilitation caused by sinusitis and the potential for improvement as a result of intervention.…”

“…1,2 The pathophysiologic mechanisms of CRS remain poorly understood, with variety of potential etiologies being proposed, including defects in innate and acquired immunity, infectious agents (viruses, bacteria, 3 However, this paradigm shifted with implication of fungus as the central etiologic agent in all forms of CRS. 4 Ponikau et al 4 demonstrated the presence of fungus utilizing their novel culture technique in 96% of CRS patients and 100% of controls.…”
