Long‐Term Results of Endonasal Sinus Surgery in Sinonasal Papillomas

Abstract: In keeping with our experience, the endonasal endoscopic approach, often in combination with a medial maxillectomy, is favored for the treatment of sinonasal papilloma because of a lower recurrence rate and a better cosmetic result. In some larger tumors and lesions in difficult locations, better visualization can be obtained by a combined external and endonasal approach.

“…22 Both endoscopic and combined approaches have shorter hospital stays and reduced morbidity compared with open techniques. 8,13,[23][24][25] Various surgical techniques have been described, ranging from a limited endoscopic sphenoethmoidectomy and wide middle meatal antrostomy to a "traditional" endoscopic medial maxillectomy with or without preservation of lamina papyracea. [7][8][9][26][27][28] However, more surgeons are accepting a more tailored or sequential segmental endoscopic surgical procedure based on the extent of disease.…”

“…They reported a lower recurrence rate of 3% and a mean hospital stay of 1 day with endoscopic approaches compared to a 24% recurrence rate and 5 days hospitalization with traditional methods. Pasquini (33,69,94,96). Most were minor complications, such as epistaxis, epiphora, temporary infraorbital hypesthesia, minimal orbital fat exposure and so on.…”

“…In general, papillomas are polypoid and occur unilaterally. Three different histological types of sinonasal papilloma have been classified by the World Health Organization: exophytic papilloma, inverted papilloma and columnar cell papilloma (Kraft et al 2003). The etiology of sinonasal papilloma remains unclear but human papilloma virus (HPV) has been proposed as a major risk factor (Kashima et al 1992;Beck et al 1995).…”
