“…Interstitial brachytherapy with transperineal approach in locally advanced cervical cancer is a well-established method for decades and there are numerous studies on ISBT; the vast majority of them are from 2D era [25, 26, 27, 28]. However, there is also an increasing number of studies based on 3D image-based brachytherapy [19, 20, 29, 30, 31].…”

“…Stage III patients had a 5-year diseasefree survival of 49%; Stage IIIB patients had a locoregional control rate of 61%. 49 For interstitial implantation with HDR, Demanes et al treated 62 patients with six fractions of HDR over two insertions; with a mean follow-up of 40 months, the 5-year disease-free survival rate for Stage III patients was 39%, but the regional pelvic control rate was 79%. 50 A report of a combined tandem and ring with interstitial applicator using HDR on a fractionated basis was published, though longterm survival and toxicity data are not yet available.…”

“…Because treatment applicators can be implanted in and/or around the CTV, ISBT has the possibility to achieve better tumor coverage regardless of the size of the vaginal and uterine cavity in cases of cervical cancer. The ABS recommends that ISBT should be used in situations such as bulky lesion, narrow vagina, inability to enter the cervical os, extension to the lateral parametrium or pelvic side wall, and lower vaginal extension (5), and several clinical reports have shown good local control results using low-dose-rate or highdose-rate (HDR) ISBT (6)(7)(8)(9)(10)(11)(12). Based on these recommendations, we performed ISBT with metal applicators until May 2005.…”
