Long term results of sentinel lymph node biopsy in early oral squamous cell carcinoma

Abstract: The objective of the study was to evaluate the long term results of the sentinel node (SN) biopsy technique in the management of the clinically negative (N0) neck in patients with early oral squamous cell carcinoma (T1–T2). Patients with positive SN underwent neck dissection. A sentinel lymph node (SLN) biopsy was performed on 31 consecutive patients. Six of the 31 patients were upstaged by the results of the SLN biopsy. The SLN biopsy allowed the identification of node metastasis in 100% of the cases with a s… Show more

“…After full text review, an additional 111 manuscripts were excluded (the reasons were presented on Fig 1). Finally, 66 studies fulfilled the inclusion criteria for the meta analysis, comprising 3566 patients [5, 1012, 1719, 21–79] (Fig 1). …”

“…Compared to elective neck dissection, SLNB is less invasive, cost-effective and beneficial to patient quality of life [69]. But the diagnostic efficacy of SLNB in early OSCC remains controversial [1012]. Furthermore, most previous individual studies contained too small of a sample size to yield a valid conclusion.…”

“…Two authors individually collected data from included articles in forms commensurate with each other. Diagnostic accuracy, represented by DOR, summary receiver operating characteristic (SROC) curve, and area under the curve (AUC), was calculated 1,5,11–102 . DOR was calculated as (true positive [TP]/false positive [FP])/(false negative [FN]/true negative [TN]) to assess diagnostic accuracy with 95% confidence intervals (CIs).…”

“…In the future, it is anticipated that the results of cost-effectiveness studies will provide opportunities to optimize the criteria for selection of appropriate procedures on an individual basis, considering costs, and should influence the decision about the choice of the optimal sampling procedure. 23 In addition, further molecular biology analysis will be helpful to identify high-risk breast cancer patients who may benefit from the currently available breast biopsy methods.…”
