Long-term Results of Stellate Ganglion Block in Patients with Olfactory Dysfunction

Abstract: BackgroundOlfactory dysfunction, including anosmia and hyposmia is difficult to treat. Although the mechanism is not well known, stellate ganglion block (SGB) is used to treat olfactory dysfunction. There are no prior studies on the long-term effects of SGB on olfactory dysfunction. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the continuity of therapeutic effects and patient satisfaction with SGB treatment.MethodsThis was a follow-up study carried out via a telephonic survey. The olfactory function of the patien… Show more

“…There are a limited number of studies of stellate ganglion blockade in PMPS [13]. However, it is widely considered to be an effective therapeutic modality for various diseases such as complex regional pain syndrome (CRPS) of the upper limb and pain in the face or head [14].…”

“…Prevalence and 95% confidence intervals (CI) for an olfactory disorder were calculated. The Rao-Scott χ 2 test (by using PROC SURVEYFREQ in SAS) and logistic regression analysis (by using PROC SURVEYLOGISTIC in SAS) were used in a univariate analysis to test the association between olfactory dysfunction and risk factors in a complex sampling design. Participant characteristics were described by using means ±SE for continuous variables and numbers and percentages for categorical variables.…”

“…, escaping from toxic fumes), and reduced life quality through impaired activities of daily living. 2 In addition, because the overall standard of living is increasing, more evaluations on the relationships between olfactory dysfunction and psychological problems have been performed. Olfactory deficits are commonly found in patients with depression and are correlated with the severity of clinical depression symptoms.…”
