Long-Term Ringing Data on Migrating Passerines Reveal Overall Avian Decline in Europe

Abstract: The loss of biodiversity is shaping today’s environment. Bird ringing is a citizen science research tool that can determine species population dynamics and trends over a large geographic area. We used a 17-year time series to assess population trends of 74 passerine species based on ringing data from autumn migration in Slovenia (south-central Europe). We defined seven guilds of species according to geographic location, ecological, migratory, breeding, and life-history traits. Almost all guilds showed declinin… Show more

“…In conclusion, among the factors affecting the area, reed management certainly does not influence the local decline of the species, and weather factors can only affect it through drought. As similar fluctuations in the population of this species have been observed in a wetland in southern Spain, changes in migration routes and wintering sites may be the underlying causes, as is the case for so many long-and short-distance migratory bird species (Alambiaga et al 2021, Petras & Vrezec 2022.…”

“…Declining population sizes are an increasing concern among scientists and conservationists (Both et al., 2006; Bowler et al., 2019; Petras & Vrezec, 2022; Sanderson et al., 2006). For migrants, conservation must target breeding and wintering habitats, as well as critical sites along the migration route (Runge et al., 2015).…”
