Long-Term Survival After Report Resection of Pulmonary Metastases from Hepatocellular Carcinoma: Report of Two Cases

Abstract: Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is often treated most effectively by resection. Although improved surgical procedures and perioperative care have made hepatic resection safe, the prognosis of patients with HCC is still poor because of the high incidence of postoperative recurrence. The most common site of extrahepatic recurrence is the lung. However, because of its multiplicity and concurrent recurrence in the liver remnant, resection of pulmonary metastases form HCC is rarely beneficial. We report two cases of… Show more

“…43 Thus, liver resection should be aggressively pursued for advanced HCC. In general, extrahepatic metastasis of HCC portends a dismal prognosis; however, there are sporadic reports of aggressive surgical resection for metastases to the adrenal gland, 44 lung, 45 and lymph nodes. 46,47 …”

“…Lung is the most common site for extrahepatic recurrence of HCC. The incidence of pulmonary metastasis after hepatic resection for HCC ranges from 37% to 58% [6]. Therefore, to reduce the pulmonary metastasis could ameliorate the prognosis of HCC.…”

“…In our patient, surgical resections were chosen with the consideration that curative resection could be performed. Thirteen patients (including ours) who underwent repeated curative pulmonary resections for the recurrence of metastatic lung cancer from HCC have been reported ,,. O'Suilleabhain et al reported the successful treatment, by resection in sequence, of metastases originating from HCC in three organs (brain, lung, and spleen).…”
